People deserve to find more joy, meaning and effectiveness in life, and reduce unnecessary suffering. This can be accomplished by identifying and moving past the obstacles within ourselves. These barriers were often built early in life in an attempt to solve the problems faced during that time. While these obstacles may have been protective in childhood, they often outlive their usefulness and become a burden in adulthood. They can be explored and mapped out by looking at patterns in relationships, and often through watching how the mind works during the therapeutic process itself. Through an integrated emotional and intellectual awareness, obsolete strategies can be replaced with more effective ones, and distorted reactions can give way to more realistic ones.
I try to find the most helpful out of a number of possible models to understand each unique individual and each moment within a treatment session. I see therapy as a collaboration, wherein each of us listens from our distinct vantage points, and we work together to build layers of understanding. Over time, the patient learns to take on more of the responsibility for this process, so that he or she can eventually learn to look at their own thoughts and feelings to help navigate challenges in life. Where necessary, I prescribe medication for short or long term symptoms, and I see the patient as a collaborator in this process as well.
